Miami octogenarian flips for fitness

Holding court: As a kid I played soccer, but later turned to tennis, and became a ranked tennis player, but World War II interrupted everything. Later I took up golf and reached handicap 10, but the sport was boring. I like the drives, but hate the putts.

Through thick and thin: I turned to running and skiing and ran more than 20 marathons either on the ground or on the snowy Alps in Switzerland. My running was ended by surgery for an artificial knee in 2005.

No downtime: Now I just work out at the gym and swim in the pool at Miami Dade College. I try to go five days a week. I lift weights and do all the machines for a half hour, then spend a half hour in the pool. On Sundays, I bike to Matheson Hammock Park and take a dive in the lagoon.

Flip out: I also do some yoga, like standing on my head. To avoid back pain, I hang on my feet with inversion boots. But the most important exercise is walking my little princess, a dappled dachshund.

Eyes and ears: My eyesight is good, but my hearing is letting me down and hearing aids do not help much.

Hold the beef: I eat a lot of fruits, cereal and fish. I'm a semi-vegetarian. I like some sweets and I have a glass of wine a day.

Looking forward: Although I've been a widower since 2004, I still enjoy life and hope to add a few years of quality life.
